In Defence of a Miserable Git!

Joe Plays the Blues by Richard Savage

Some comments made me smile after my post about Christmas and the fact I am a bit of a miserable git!   It is a bit tongue in cheek really, my dislike of Christmas, yet there are elements I really don’t like, the falseness being a big part of it.  I should explain where the feelings come from.  From the age of about 16, I started playing records which consumed most Christmases, the hobby turned into a profession and I had seven years playing records for a living.  This in itself was not a bad life, I loved what I did, but to watch the public at play at Christmas was not always that good.  The alcohol, the fights, the abuse…  really not good.  One year, at a Christmas party, I saw the CEO of the company have his thumb bitten to the bone by an employee, before the police were called to contain the ensuing riot that took place.  After the night club, I bought a pub restaurant and spent the next 24 Christmases working.  So I see Christmas as a time of work anyway.  And I have not always seen the best side of my fellow man.  Having said that, I had a great Christmas and hope you did too.   Catch you in the New Year and a happy 2011 to us all!  :)

  1. I’m a bit of a Scrooge myself when it comes to Christmas. I remember a essay I wrote for 12th grade English. The first line was: December spreads her snow-filled wings and covers our world with cold dispair.

I’ve been to my Grandparent’s house when all of the grandkids and great-grands were there. My Grandparents had to purchase for 6 kids, all of their kids (they all had at least 2), and for the great great grands. My cousins would sit there and quite literally state, “Why did you get me this? I didn’t want this, this is junk.” And quite soon, it was indeed broken. Christmas should be all year. You should have the spirit of love and giving at all times. Why only one day a year? Have we not enough strength of spirit to handle the task?
